Adrian Chan joined the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering at Carleton in 2003, and since then he has established an active and productive research program. His research has spanned a range of interests, from the electronic nose, to the ECG biometrics, to biomedical signal quality analysis, to a history of the wheelchair in Canada. He has received the Research Achievement Award from Carleton, a 3M teaching fellowship, the best professor award from the Carleton Student Engineering Society, and the Outstanding Engineering Educator award from IEEE Ottawa. He has served as Director of the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Biomedical Engineering, and is currently Chair of the Advisory Board for the Research Education Accessibility and Design (READ) Initiative at Carleton. He has served as the Vice President of the CMBES, and on the Long Term Conference Planning and Awards Committees. He is an active supporter of enrichment for high school students serving as Program Director for Shad Valley, Carleton University. As noted by his nominators, "[Adrian] is a dedicated teacher and mentor to his students and thrives on maximizing their success and in turn equally learns from them." "It is not unusual to find Adrian mentoring a student over a coffee at Rooster's Coffee House, whether that student is from his own lab or not. ... Adrian is the type of professor that will stand out in students' minds years after graduating and moving onto bigger challenges."
